I am in states custody and am interested in doing online schooling due to the different changes in schools. If so are there any free online schools in NY?
“Unfortunately New York State has yet to approve of any tuition free public online high schools offered to high school aged residents of New York. However, private online high schools offering classes and the opportunity to earn an online high school diploma to persons from a variety of ages are still available to residents of New York.”
I’m so sorry the State refuses to accept virtual schools, it is a wonderful alternative for those who don’t want to/can’t home educate or attend a brick and mortar school.
There was one private school in NY, high school level, but it didn’t list the cost. And reading the fine print you must be 18 or older.
I still think you should state your case to the state/those caring for you and see if funding could be provided or tutoring be done over a school you aren’t comfortable with attending. They might find it is less expensive to allow you this opportunity. Also, they might find that when you are allowed to make decisions about where you go to school/how you learn best, your grades are better and your feelings about education and the future are more positive. Good Luck with your education this year and in the future!
somtheing that can help me get and find a good home schooling site . I hate my school I can’t stand it I want to be homeschooled . …Now the next thing is convincing my mom haha….a
what you need is info on:
1. Homeschool laws in your state (legally how to start) &
2. Getting materials that work for your homeschool
Here’s a good website on state laws: http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp
You can also do some hunting on your “state name & homeschool law” and find some great local sites. These may also have a local homeschool group to contact with more ‘hometown’ answers on how to start and where you can get together with other homeschoolers.
Now… materials. You need to find the right materials for you and your mother. Don’t worry if this takes awhile… its kind of like choosing a major in college. There are *so* many choices and you really have to take some time to know yourself so you can see how you work and learn. You can always change your mind and try something new if your first choice isn’t working.
There are two ways to go:
1. Research your ‘learning style’ and find a curriculum that fits it. Here’s a page on learning styles that could help get you started: http://www.time4learning.com/blog/index….
2. Start with a very ‘school at home’ curriculum… nice easy ‘box set’ to get you started… and then change what isn’t working for you as you go. Here is one of *many* you could try: http://www.schoolhousesource.com/lifepac…
Good luck!

Hi -
You have a lot of options. The first thing is to check your states individual requirements (they should be available online)
try this link for those -> http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?State=CA
You can go independent by using option 1 in the link above but you have to submit the notice. You can try the virtual academy route since it is past that October notice time listed and then switch if you are not happy with that route. I know a lot of people in Cali swear by K12′s virtual academy but I am not sure about costs.
I am fortunate to be in a state where we don’t have requirements so it was easy for me to just pull the kids out.
I found a lot of information and support by joining yahoo homeschooling groups. This group (Support4HomeSchool@yahoogroups.com) has a lot of parent members and you can post your question and will have a lot of good feedback since there is a lot of people from Cali. You can also signup to specific groups like the K12 groups or other virtual academy groups that you are interested in as well – There are also region specific groups in yahoo you can try for quick, specific answers.
Good luck with your journey
ok i was homeschooled for 2 years and i did these BYU courses.
they offer them for a whole year…with tests to take online and a final exame. in all subjects.
go to BYU.edu and somehow you should find it if you look hard enough.
good luck.
Are you wanting to homeschool them on your own with no help or would you prefer to have some guidance and assistance?
Riverside county has some great Charter/homeschool groups you can use. Some of them even help pay for extra curricular activities like dance, Tae Kwondo, and gymnastics. The Charter programs are free and they offer free tutoring at nearby buildings located within the inland empire.
One of the names which I can remember was Julian homeschool schools, one of my sons teachers recommended them. Eagle Peak I believe is the name of another one. There is also a public school in Temecula which has a homeschool program and you do not need to live in Temecula to use it.
If you want to homeschool on your own, find a teacher store. There is one in Riverside and one in Murrieta.
I hope this helps. Reading your question over again, are you concerned about legal issues and what you need to be doing?
I was in the same boat @ 6 months ago. I thought maybe i would just do things by the seat of my pants since my children are so young, But the more I got into sourcing resources the more I was inclined to at least define my approach.
Definately do the following:
Assess children current knowledge in the basic areas
Establish a work space. This could be a corner or entire room, but be flexible a know that learning will not be contained to four walls.
Establish learning objectives either weekly or monthly based upon what you’d like to get accomplished or your children’s topic of intrest. Again be flexible, your week may start with ecology and migrate into astronomy. Go with what your children are interested in.
Set up a calendar of places to go, people to see and things to do.
Create a resource list of every potential place, person or event that will be instrumental in your childs education.
Get on email and snail mail list for local happenings. My family gains cultural insight from fre evnts sponsered by our local parks and rec, museums and library.
Join a support group!!!
That way you can get best practice ideas from others without having to reinvent he wheel.
Embrace the journey and HAVE FUN!!!
Good Luck!
CHECK WITH YOU STATE FIRST USUALLY THERE IS
A FORM TO FILL OUT FOR HOMESCHOOL TO SEND. IN.
THEN FIGURE OUT WHAT KIND OF TEXT YOU WANT .
LIKE ABEKA, OR A ONLINE SCHOOL IS NOT A BAD
THOUGHT. WHAT GRADE ARE THEY IN.
THERE IS PENN FOSTER HIGH SCHOOL WHICH IS
REALLY GREAT OR KEYSTONE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.
You’ll need to find out the laws and options in your state first and then choose what you feel is best for you.
Remember… there are many different methods of “home teaching”… You do NOT have to bring the structured traditional school into your home.

Since you say you have already tried all the homeschooling websites on the Internet, and they were not helpful to you, I would recommend joining a local homeschool support group. That way, you can meet with experienced homeschoolers who can answer your questions in person and get you headed in the right direction.
hi. im 15 and im homeschooled right now. well its not really homeschool, its online. its all credited online christian school. http://www.themorningstaracademy.org <<< make sure you put .org and not .com this is my second year doing it. its VERY flexible. i do all the work on my own time. my family and i travel alot too. and to tell you the truth ive learned more there then i have at a normal school. the only thing i dont like about it is i dont get to see my friends as much because i live in the country. im not sure if you can do it this late.. but i would seriously consider it for the next school year if you want your children homeschooled. you dont have to do anything. its completely online. the teachers post the daily lessons on there along with tests that are graded by them. and you can chat with the teacher whenever you need to if you dont understand something. i hope this helped.
I believe in CA you need to file an intent with your school district. You’ll also need to fill in and send the proper paperwork to your school district – assuming you’re pulling your children from public school.
I don’t understand why “all the websites” haven’t helped. Have you tried some specific to HS’ing in CA?
Are you trying to find curriculum and/or just needing help with the day-to-day logistics of HS’ing?
I konw you do not like web sites. But just try this site http://www.icedor.com They conduct virtual classrooms. They use white board and video conference to teach students from all over the world. Further more they offer free MCQs and Forums for students to discuss and learn from one another from all over the world in a watched enviorements.
They are great, check them out
Depends on the grade you are starting with. In my home state you are not required to send an intent to homeschool if your child is pre-k.
I checked HSLDA and it looks like in CA you are only required to “File an annual affidavit with the Superintendent of Public Instruction between October 1 and 15″ .. plus CA requires you keep an attendance register.. sounds like my home state laws in many ways.
I’m not quite sure if an affidavit is the same as an intent to homeschool, call your local board of education and ask, or find a local homeschool group and ask them.. I suggest you get your forms ready and mail them as soon as you can certified mail signature required so you receive back a signed card fr your records proving they received it.. — I highly recommend this.
If they are already in school you may need to find out from the BOE or a homeschool support group what is required to take them out of public school, some states have specific requirements for this.
If you are interested in a faith based support group try Christian Home Educators of California.. even if you aren’t interested in a faith based homeschool support group they will be able to tell you more specifics on what you need to do. . — their contact info..
